8/23 Rotary Newsletter

Sent: August 25, 2010

After a brief absence due to last week's Highway Clean Up, we were back together at Lee's for our weekly luncheon.

We welcomed guests Russ Rittgers from the Hilliard Rotary Club and Calvin Gebhart, our new District Governor for District 6690.

LOTTERY

Many thanks to Jake Hill for stepping in as Lottery Master, and many thanks to Bob Lilley for providing the new deck of cards!   Today's little pot of $12 was won by me (Valery)!  That's when we realized that no one could remember who had won the past two weeks when there were no cards for the BIG POT drawing.

So, after checking previous newsletters, Doug Fisher will be drawing for either himself or the table group he was with on 8/9, followed by Damon Kuhn drawing for his table group from 8/9, then followed by Valery for her win today!  If you aren't at the meeting on 8/30 to draw, your chance is GONE!!!

SGT AT ARMS

Larry Willard was the last minute stand in for this job today, so he was scrambling for fines.  He did pick up $2 from latecomers Bob Lilley and Scott Ratliff.  Following a long and involved story about his van, Larry levied a $2 fine on Dick Brandt for something he did or didn't do -- who knows!  With Larry, the story is the fun part!  Larry picked up a tidy sum for those of us who did not have both our pins and badges, and then hit the "overly dressed" among us with a $1 fine for ties and necklaces (Kathy Krumlauf, Steve Stirn, Mark Hamon,Jake Hill and Jim Robinson).

Happy Bucks started with Valery happily donating half of her $12 lottery pot back to the club; Mike McGreevy was happy to tell us he had a wonderful vacation in Ireland; Steve kicked in a "sorry" buck (for what I am not sure) and Dick Brandt added $1 for getting time with his granddaughter.  Bob Lilley paid $1 to do his commercial for the BYF Tailgate Party scheduled for Friday before the 1st football game.  $5 gets you a great meal and helps support this wonderful organization.  Cooking is ourtdoors, but seating and eating is in the cafeteria at the high school this year.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Dave Snipes thanked the other 10 Rotarians that came out for Highway Clean Up.  Due to a light trash load, we were able to clean about 90% of the highway with just the crew we had.  The school open houses cost us some of the regulars, so be sure to mark your calendars again for the last Clean Up of 2010 on October 18th!

Larry Willard announced that the previously held Shrimp Dinner at the high school has been scheduled for October 1, but the menu will likely change.  It will probably be a Cincinnati-style spaghetti dinner. More details to follow, but mark you calendar.  We will need workers that night!

Jim Robinson reminded anyone that did not already pick up their t-shirt to do so today, and to get their money in by next Monday, August 30 if you want to order the nicer looking polo shirt.

Future programs:

8/30  Jason Quier

9/6  Holiday

9/13  John Smith

9/20  Andy McGhee

PROGRAM

Today's program was presented by our new District Governor Calvin Gebhart.   Calvin has a long and impressive business career in banking and community service career, as well.  He is a member of the Circleville Sunrise Rotary Club.

Calvin met earlier today with our new Club President and Board members and said he is impressed with our membership progress and our program of work, especially our efforts with children, including dictionaries for 3rd graders, BYF support, and sponsorship of the Back-to-School Bash.

Calvin spoke about the Rotary Spirit of Service, our individual club, "Every Rotarian/Every Year, and one person can make a difference.  Our district has 59 clubs with 3800 members.  The International theme for Rotary this year is "Building Communities/Bridging Continents" and our new International President is Ray Klinginsmith.

Thanks to Rotary's efforts internationally, only 4 countries in the world now report live/new cases of Polio.  We are very close to eradicating it completely!

Calvin stressed the basic tenets of the Rotary 4 Way Test:  Is it the truth?  Is it fair to all concerned?  Will it build goodwill and friendship?  Will it be beneficial to all concerned?  Important questions to keep at the forefront of our day-to-day activities.
