7/12 Rotary Meeting

Sent: July 13, 2010

Back together after the Independence Day holiday, and ready to get started on the new year with new President Jim Robinson.

We welcomed regular guest Rotarian Russ Rittgers and potential new member Lindsay Barnhouse, Branch Manager for the Logan office of Atomic Credit Union.  Also on hand was Mayor Mike Walsh who is our program presenter for the day.

LOTTERY

Larry Willard served as Lottery Master today, and had Logan's Mayor Mike Walsh pull the winning ticket, which belonged to the Kienzle table Co-op.  Kienzle himself was deputized to pull the card, but didn't manage to find the winner.  The BIG POT of $380 will continue to grow!

SGT AT ARMS

Sgt. Kienzle started with late fines for Kathy Krumlauf, Scott Ratliff, Bob Lilley and Andy McGhee.

The lottery fine was easy -- all $14 was donated back to the Club!  While levying cell phone fines on Susan Aldridge, Van Cardaras and Damon Kuhn, Jon Mesarch tried to sneak in -- and was immediately hit with a late fine!  Valery was fined for bringing a guest (Lindsay Barnhouse) who was anti-OSU.  Can't help it, Larry, if my guests have good taste!

Happy Bucks:  Damon has a birthday this month; Valery & Dutch will hit their 40th anniversary this month; Kathy Krumlauf paid a buck to give a great big "thank you" to all the Rotary members who have donated money or items to the HVCH Foundation Auction scheduled for 10/17/10.  Be there or BE SQUARE!

ANNOUNCEMENTS

President Jim announced that the Board of Directors has voted to order t-shirts for the club so we know who we are when we are out in public and working at events.  After asking Joe Murtha to do a roll call for shirt sizes, Jim was gently reminded by Kathy Krumlauf that there might be those among us who did not want to "holler out" their shirt size!  So, see Joe at a meeting, call and leave a message or send him an e-mail  to let him know your t-shirt size! If you are interested in purchasing the fancier polo, Jim will have the catalog at the next few meetings for you to make your choice.

Our Oktoberfest social event has been scheduled for October 4th this year.  Mark your calendar NOW so we don't have to be missing you!

Our fall dinner project at the high school has been scheduled for Friday, October 1st -- their is discussion about changing the menu - see Jim or Larry Willard if you have strong feelings about this.

The board also voted to help finance and/or organize a session of swimming lessons at the city pool now that it is open again.  More info on this later.

President Jim also passed around a great picture and thank you letter from our youth commission baseball time for 2010.

PROGRAM

Mayor Walsh was introducted by President Jim Robinson.  The Mayor wanted to bring us up-to-date on the city pool situation.  Thanks to Citizens Bank of Logan, the city pool is back in business.  During the first week of operation, attendance was FREE!  Mayor Walsh stated they had over 600 people a day at the pool during that time.  On Saturday and Sunday, July 10 & 11, they began charging $1 per person, and still had attendance of 350 per day.

The Mayor stated it cost $450 per day for employee wages and chemical to operate the pool.  Since they obviously aren't taking in enough money to cover that, Citizens Bank and also one anonymous local family have offered to cover the deficit at the end of the season.  The pool will close when school opens, as before.

Last year, because the leaks were so severe and they were always adding cold water, the temperature of the water never got above 71 degrees. The Mayor stated that the pool temp is already over 85 degrees this year!

Mayor Walsh then updated the group on the paving and curb work on Front Street.  Because the city is doing the curb work themselves, they were able to do quite a stretch on Front Street.  In addition, they also put in a new catch basin in front of Dollar General to end a puddle problem there.  Now the street will get paved and it will be a really great improvement in the look of this main roadway for the city.
