5/10 Rotary newsletter
Sent: May 14, 2010
It is unbelievable how fast days fly by this time of year -- sorry for the delay in getting this newsletter out, but it's been a CRAZY week!
22 members and 4 visitors enjoyed a great meeting this week. With us today was Russ Rittgers, Andrew Delong, LHS Vocational Ag. teacher and our Asst. District Governor Lonnie Alonso and his wife Christy.
LOTTERY
Little pot went to Steve Stirn this week, even thought the Kienzle table had tickets from 9 people in their pool! Steve took a big $15, but missed the winning card for the BIG POT of $265.
SGT. AT ARMS
The annoying Larry Kienzle took to the floor, taking money for everyone left and right. First take was $2 from Steve for the lottery win; next was Ben Hollinger for getting gravy on his badge, Damon for getting his pic in the paper without identifying himself as a Rotarian, $2 from Valery for perceived threats in last week's newsletter (what, me?) and late fines for Andy McGhee, Jake Hill, Kathy Krumlauf and Russ Rittgers. Watch out, Andy -- you're going to take the record for late fees from John Smith if you don't watch out!
Happy Bucks: Ben Hollinger for his 11th anniversary; Russ Rittgers' 27th anniversary; Bob Lilly's 41st anniversary; Damon Kuhn for his oldest daughter's selection as LHS head majorette for 2010; Susan Aldridge announced Walmart's golf tourney results -- $7000 for the Children's Miracle Network!; Bob Lilley happy not to have to carry Pancake tickets around with him and people have stopped avoiding him; Jim Robinson for his oldest son placing in the conference track meet and youngest son won the shot put and discus in Nelsonville and took a 3rd and 2nd at the Jessie Owens Classic at OSU.
ANNOUNCEMENTS
President Dave announced the receipt of a thank you letter from Hospice for our donation to the 5K Walk/Run. They raised $7300 this year!
Thank you card from Rebecca Young received for our Rotary scholarship.
Next fundraiser: Serving and cleaning up pancakes for GOBA on June 20th! We don't cook this time, just serve and clean and we make BIG MONEY!!! We need everyone possible, starting at 5am on that Sunday. We will be done and home by 9am, so no whining about the early hour -- let's just get it done!
PANCAKE REPORT
Top salesman - Bob Lilley again

#3 Jake Hill's son!!!! (do we all feel really stupid now?)

Great work, everyone, especially Project Chair Bob Lilley and the lovely Sally Lilley, too!
PROGRAM
Jim Robinson introduced his speaker for the day, Andrew Delong. Andrew is the instructor for the Vocational Agriculture program at LHS. Although he has 15 yrs experience, this is his first year at LHS. The LHS program was established in 1934, and has 170 students this year, with a 50/50 gender mix.
The FFA motto of Learning to Do, Doing to Learn, Earning to Life, Living to Serve really represents what the program has to offer. The FFA Degree program has 3 components - classroom education, Lab, and SAE (supervised agriculture experience). The degree ladder starts with the "Greenhand" level, proceeds to the Chapter Degree, State Degree and American FFA Degree. Each level has specific criteria that must be achieved and documented.
The local program offers leadership opportunities (election of officers), travel, competition, SAE and real world experience. There are 315 FFA chapters in Ohio with 23,000 members. Considering how many of our LHS students and teams achieve state and national prominence, it is a great testament to our local program and teachers that they are such a superior group of students.
Thanks, Jim, for introducing us to Mr. Delong and for presenting this excellent program1
