3/29 Rotary Newsletter
Sent: April 3, 2010
My apologies to everyone for the tardiness of this newsletter - it has been a VERY BUSY week and I have not had time to get this done until today!
We were a small group last Monday --less than 20 (we pay for 25 lunches every Monday, so we LOST money!). The front set up included a change of location for the flag, but we all managed to find it eventually. Larry Willard was called upon for the prayer in the absence of Mike McGreevy (on jury duty), and he was either doing a very poor impersonation of McGreevy, or just continuing the flubs associated with our weekly prayer. When he finally got going, he did a great job! I have been told that the culprit in this debacle is actually Steve Stirn, but that's just hearsay -- no concrete evidence at this time.
We welcomed several guests: Bill Boone; Chuck Taylor from the New Lex Hocking College Campus and our speaker for the day, Dan Krivicich.
LOTTERY
We started the lottery with Marion Riggs drawing for Doug Fisher, who won the small pot last week at the Hocking County DD off site meeting. Marion is usually pretty lucky, but he came up blank today.
Today's winning ticket was held by Jon Mesarch for a $14 win, but he, too, was unable to find the Queen of Spades. The BIG POT of $184 continues to grow.
SGT. AT ARMS
Larry Kienzle did the honors today, and began by fining himself for fining everyone else. Nice to know he plays fair -- or so I thought, until he decided to fine ME for misspellings! Mr. Kienzle, hasn't anyone every mentioned to you the "power of the pen"? Or in this case, the "power of the keyboard"? Paybacks, Kienzle, --paybacks!!
Late-comers included John Smith, Andy McGhee, Ben Hollinger, Jon Mesarch and Bob Lilley. No syrup fines to Bill Boone, Ben Hollinger and Russ Rittgers, and No Toy fines to Russ Rittgers, Jon Mesarch, Jake Hill, Bob Lilley, Jim Rogers and Marion Riggs.
Happy Bucks: Damon Kuhn and Val both gave a buck for the good weather forecast for Fishing Day; Kathy tossed in one for the successful completion of yet another trip to North Carolina -- this time for a wedding; Ben Hollinger paid to announce a successful fundraiser for a new Sensory Room at the HCDD for Autism therapy. Their Spaghetti Dinner raised over $1000. He also reminded everyone of the Art Show at the Bowen House on 3/30; Jerry Hutton announced that the Hocking College Energy Institute was putting up the wind turbine on the 30th at 9am -- sure to be a real "photo-op"; Jon Mesarch was very happy to be home following a 52 hour return trip from Hong Kong! WOW!!!; Joe Murtha was happy that Kentucky lost; Jim Robinson was VERY happy that all of his sons, and LHS, did very well in track meets last weekend.

PROGRAM
Jerry Hutton presented a terrific program by Dan Krivicich, CEO of Electronic Vision. EV has been in business since 1985, and they specialize in digitale applications for educational purposes. Hocking College Energy Institute is working them to develop on-line courses and degree programs. Check them out at www.ev.net.
His entire presentation was very interesting. It doesn't translate well to notes here, but there were several interesting statistics; over 12 million students now use digital options for some of their learning; 1.5 million students use it for ALL of their learning! Nursing programs now us more on-line learning options than any other program.
The most interesting comment I heard was this: There are two kinds of digital learning users: if you are under 29 years old, you are a "native" - there was never a time you didn't have a home computer or gaming system and access to information/classes on-line. if you are over 29, you are an "immigrant" - you have MADE your self learn to use computers at work and home, but they are an adjunct, rather than a first line source of information or class work. I find that to be VERY true.
If you weren't at this program, you missed a GREAT ONE!!
See you all on April 5th for the rehash on the Fishing Day, and an Easter recap.
