3/8 Rotary Meeting

Sent: March 11, 2010

A lovely Spring day welcomed a small but enthusiastic group of Rotarians!

Guests for the day included Bill Boone and Corey Combs, LHS student and speaker for the day.

LOTTERY

Lottery Master Doug Wells was "in the house" and delivered the small pot of $14 to Valery Junge.  First day back after vacation seemed to be lucky!  There was no luck, however, in the draw for the BIG POT.  The $142 stays in tact and grows for next week.

SGT. AT ARMS

Sgt. Jim Rogers went to work harvesting dollars along the way.  First were the late fines for Scott Ratliff and John Smith.  Next came the badges/pins: Doug Wells, Jake Hill, Ben Hollinger and Jim Robinson.  Robinson also paid $1 for waiting until VERY late to ask Rogers to take on the Sgt. at Arms duty.  Rogers then collected $1 from everyone who had not yet sold a Pancake Feast ticket -- which was almost EVERYBODY!!!!

Happy bucks:  Bill Boon was happy that his in-laws were going home today; Ben Hollinger was happy that he was leaving on vacation on Thursday, even though he wasn't sure where he was going ("My wife made the plans!"); Valery was happy to be back after vacation and illness (and also contributed $4 from the lottery win); Doug Wells was happy about the OSU women's win; Ben also paid $1 to give us parking instructions for the Rotary visit to the old Green School location that has been remodeled for the occupancy by the MRDD group.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Jim Robinson announced that the program on March 22nd would be off site at the old Green School site, to see the renovations for the Hocking Cty. Board of Mental Disabilities.

The local LPA made his weekly address (Local Pancake Authority).  Bob Lilley passed around the sign up sheet and asked for people to take two slots to make sure we were well covered.  He also announced that the last meeting in March was "Syrup Day".  Everyone is to bring their bottle of syrup to contribute on that date.  Be there, or GET FINED!!!!

Mike McGreevy reported about the changes in the Smith Chapel Food Distribution.  They will be distributing every Wednesday and Thursday, 10a to 2pm.  They hope this will bring back some of the volunteers who couldn't handle the long Monday's each month, and also cut down on the lines of people coming in.

Valery made some announcements on the upcoming District meeting in Athens.  There are many activities that some or all of the club members might be interested in.  In particular, there is a Wine Train on the Hocking Valley Scenic Railway on Friday Night May 14 at $30 per person; golf outing on Thursday @ $85 per person.  Of special interest in the Saturday Governor's Luncheon ($20 each) with the keynote speaker of Dr. Atul Gawande.  Atul is the son of our District Governor and a very interesting individual.  Noted columnist and author, he is considered a expert on health care in the political circles in Washington DC.  Having heard interviews with Atul and read his books, Valery and husband, Dutch, highly reccommend attendance at this luncheon!  For more information, or to register, go to the district web site at www.district6690.org.

Family Fishing Day is set for April 2nd,  Most arrangements will mimic last year's set up, but volunteers are needed!  This is a really popular event and brings us a lot of positive pubilicity and community notice.  Please try to make time in your schedule for this Good Friday event.  Call Damon Kuhn for more information.

PROGRAM

Today's program was provided by Jim Robinson.  He invited Corey Combs to address the club regarding his study trip to Oxford University last summer, part of which was paid for by a donation from our Club.

Corey was extremely well spoken and gave us lots of information about his time in England.  He lived and studies and several "colleges" at Oxford University.  He was happy to have made friends with many young people from other countries, some of whom he is still in contact with.  He has regular contact with students in Russia, Hawaii, and Thailand.  He is also in contact with a professor from Yale, where he hopes to attend college.

While he spent approximately 6 hours per day in class, there was also time to explore and enjoy the country.  He was able to shop, attend plays, take in museums and generally absorb the ambiance of English culture.

We thoroughly enjoy Corey's presentation and quickly realized that our contribution to his trip was money well spent.  Many thanks to Jim and Corey for this program!
