How many of you went to Lee's at lunch time for the "meeting that didn't happen"? I hope not many, since we publicized the change quite a bit.
A good sized group of Rotarians and a few visitors gathered at 5:30 at the new Central Elementary School for a tour of the soon-to-be-open facility. Many thanks to Courtney Snipes Spatar, Principal of the new school and daughter of Rotary Prez Dave, for the guided tour. This new school will be filled by the current occupants of Central Primary (old East Elementary) and Central Intermediate (Old West Elementary) to bring together approximately 475 students!
The new Central Elementary, located on the hilltop site of the old Logan High School is certainly colorful! When you enter the building you can see straight through to the cafeteria area, which features an interesting faux awning effect over the "cafe". It looks very friendly and inviting.
The school has a nice sized library with an interesting corner stair-step reading area, connected to a huge computer classroom for instruction of an entire class at a time. The administration area is comfortable, though definitely doesn't waste any space. The first floor houses the pre-school and first grade classrooms that are connected to a separate playground area, just for the little kids. Second, third and fourth grade are located on the second floor in "pod" areas. Four classrooms for each grade are color coded so that the munchkins can't get lost.
Still to be installed is the "big kid" playground and ball field, but the contractor is hopeful that all will be in place for the open house in March.
The public spaces including the stage area, cafeteria and gymnasium are really nicely organized and all flow together. No longer will they have to worry about running out of audience space for programs! The kitchen is really a marvel, as well. All in all, it really looks like we are getting our money's worth!
On a side note, we all noticed that the new downhill area from North Street to the parking area apparently makes a great sledding run! If you weren't able to make the tour, be sure the watch the paper for the announcement of the Open House. The completion of this school is the end of the nine year Master Construction Plan for the District. It has been a hurculean effort on the part of many of the employees and administrators of our district, and it has brought our community to a place of great pride in all of our school buildings. Thanks to all of us for voting to tax ourselves, and thanks to all who had a hand in getting them built.
The tour was followed with great fellowship at Pizza Crossing. There is never a time we don't have great fun when we go there!
