11/23/09 Newsletter
Sent: November 25, 2009
For the Monday before Turkey Day, we had a great turnout, including our regular guest, Bill Boone. Best wishes are extended to all for a wonderful holiday -- travel safely and eat with great JOY!
LOTTERY
Well, Lottery Master Doug Wells made history again today! After the "Fun Table (that's any table with Van Cardaras) pooled their tickets and won the small pot of $14, Doug invited recent retiree Larry Kienzle to do the honors of pulling for the BIG POT of $26. Wouldn't you know -- LARRY DID IT! That makes three winners in three weeks!!!! The tablemates agreed to donate the huge winning of $40 back to the Club for the Bike Project. Doug has promised to find a new deck of cards for next week so that we can start building that pot to a decent level, again.

SGT. AT ARMS
Jim Rogers did the honors today, and went after the bucks with gusto!
First were the late comers: Marion Riggs, Larry Menchhofer, John Smith, Jon Mesarch and Ben Hollinger. Next, he took a buck from Jim Robinson because his boss, Steve Stirn, left early! Next, Jim picked up well over $20 when he asked for a buck from anyone who did not attend the LHS play the previous weekend. There was also a happy buck from Doug Fisher for the football day he had with his son.
ANNOUNCEMENTS
Dave thanked our Rotarians that volunteered with Smith Chapel food distribution today: Joe, Mike, LeeAnn and Susan. The line was exceedingly long today. We need to remember those less fortunate during this holiday season.
We are down to only 3 members still owing for their Shrimp Dinner obligations. If you are one of those 3, please let Joe know when he can expect to receive your payments!
Dave reviewed the reservation requirements for the Christmas Dinner. All Rotarians and a guest are included, but if you make a reservation and don't show up or cancel, you will be billed $25 for your guest and $16 for your meal (the difference between the cost and our usual $9 lunch). If you reserve, cancellations will be accepted through December 2nd. Call Dave if you aren't sure about how this works.
Christmas Party - December 7th @ Lee's Banquet Haus. The menu is the same as the wonderful food we had last year: shrimp cocktail, prime rib and all the "fixins". Remember to bring hats & gloves for the Klothes Kloset, an unwrapped toy for Toys to Share and something in a brown bag for the brown bag auction.
NEW MEMBER INSTALLATION
We were thrilled today to install a new member in our club! Our newest Rotarian is Geoff Grimes from the Atom Credit Union.
Geoff was born and raised in Waverly, Ohio and continues to live there now. He was an All State shot putter in high school (and still looks like he could throw pretty well today!). Geoff graduated from Shawnee State and has been with the Atomic Credit Union since then, working his way up to his current position. Geoff is still single! (Anyone have a daughter to marry off?)
Welcome to the Club, Geoff - we look forward to working with you on all of our projects!
PROGRAM
Our program today was provided by Scott Ratliff from Logan Health Carea Center. Scott introduced us to Greg Winslow, the Director of Development for the Central Ohio Chapter of the Alzheimers Association.
Greg stated that he works with a number of nursing homes that a part of the Kindred company. They have worked very hard to raise awareness and raise funds for Alzheimers.
Currently, 5.3Million people suffer from Alzheimers., with another person diagnosed every 70 seconds. One in 8 baby boomers will be affected by this disease. Alzheimers is only one of 40 different forms of dementia, but all are heartbreaking. There are no survivors of Alzheimers -- the Association works for research in slowing the rate of progression of the disease and supporting the families and caregivers of those suffering from the disease.
The Alzheimers Association is currently funding $360,000 in reasearch at Ohio State University hospital.
Thanks for a great program, Scott -- something we will all probably face sooner or later in our families. It's good to know that there are volunteers available to make sure we can get the information and support that will keep us all going.
