11/9/09 Rotary Newsletter
Sent: November 10, 2009
After a brilliant weekend of sunshine and warm temperatures, we gathered for another week of fun and fellowship at Lee's Banquet Haus. For the first time in three weeks, we had an actual flag to pledge to, but today the President was missing! Thanks to Jim Robinson for stepping in to keep things rolling!
GUESTS
We welcomed our regular guest, Bill Boone. Bill spends quite a few Mondays here in Logan and we enjoy having him as a part of our Club. Jim Robinson was wondering if he qualified for the attendance award, since he's with us more than some of our regular members!
Also visiting today was Geoff Grimes, a potential new member, and Corby Leach, newly elected member of the Logan-Hocking School Board. Jerry Hutton brought along his new Administrative Assistant at the Hocking College Energy Institue, Ava Mowery, and Bill Rinehart invited Dr. Ron Erickson, new President of Hocking College, to be our speaker for the day.
LOTTERY
This was a RED LETTER DAY in the lottery history!!
First order of business was to have Marion Riggs draw a card, since he won the small pot last week at the Library. Since Marion wasn't in attendance, Dick Brandt was designated to draw for him. Although he did his best to pull the wrong card, Dick failed MISERABLY and Marion Riggs was declared the winner of the $360 BIG POT!!!! Of course, we were all so pleased for Marion

!
Next order of business for the day, was to draw a ticket for the
NEW small pot of $11. Today's winner was Dr. John Smith. Because Lottery Master Doug didn't have a new deck to start with, he made an executive decision to allow John to pull from the remaining cards in the old deck. He arbitrarily selected the Ace of Diamonds at the card to find, and wouldn't you know ------HE FOUND IT!!!! Two winners in one Day

!! Unfortunately for John, timing is everything. Even after "winning" the
NEW Big Pot, he only collected another $11!
If you weren't here today, you really missed an EVENT!
Sgt. at Arms
Larry Kienzle stepped up to handle the Sgt. duties today, and his height and humor did a "number " on everyon.
Lottery fines came first - $25 for Marion's win, but only $2 for John's paltry winnings. Dick Brandt was fined for bad card picking, and Doug was also fined for allowing such a situation to occur!
Corby Leach was fined for being at the wrong meeting, and Jim Rogers was fined for going to that same wrong meeting. Bill Boone and Scott Ratliff paid $1 for coming late, but Larry didn't have the heart to take another $1 from John, after he lost a chance at the $360 lottery pot.
Jake Hill had to pay ANOTHER $1 for allowing the economy to remain down, Doug Fisher paid for the lack of vaccines for us old folks, and Van offered up a buck for making Pam rake all the leaves this past weekend.
Happy Bucks were everywhere today. Bill Boone and Bill Rinehart had birthday bucks and Rinehart had an anniversary, as well. Corby Leach threw in another $1 for his daughter's birthday; Doug Wells gave a $1 in honor of the Veteran's Parade; Bob Lilley gave $2 - one for his son's birthday, and another because the son is finally expecting a new grandchild for Bob! Jim Robinson had a buck for his youngest child's 18th birthday (almost home free, Jim!); Susan Aldridge donated $1 because of the increase in Logan logo items due to their winning season; Jason Quier paid $1 to recognize the Amvets Juniors for their 1st place float win in the Veteran's Parade; Valery paid a thank you $1 for not having to watch political commercials; Jim Rogers paid $1 in thanks for the passage of Issue 2 and Jim Robinson came back with a "winning" thank you that we could all get behind: thanks for Logan winning, OSU winning, Cleveland winning and Bengals getting a "bye" next week!
ANNOUNCEMENTS
There is still money outstanding from the Shrimp Dinner! If you have not yet paid for your tickets or pie, please do so IMMEDIATELY!! When all is collected, we will have a profit of $1113.
Seven members are also past due on quarterly dues -- please take care of that issue ASAP.
Remember to check your calendar for upcoming dates: Christmas Party on December 7th at Lee's; December 17th is Rotary Night at the Bowen House (let's pack the place with friends and family!!!)
PROGRAM
Thanks to Bill Rinehart for inviting Dr. Ron Erickson to address our Club! He was an excellent speaker and made his presentation very enjoyable.
Dr. Erickson took over as President and Chief Executive Officer for Hocking College on June 15 of this year. He previously served as Vice-president of Academic Affairs and Institutional Planning for Dakota Community College in Rosemount, Minnesota. He is an avid fisherman and outdoorsman.
Dr. Erickson stated he is particularly proud of the Energy Institute here in Logan. It is unique -- there is no other campus like it anywhere in the United States. Everything, including the building itself, is unusual. All of the systems and supports are visible throughout the building in order to use it as a teaching tool for students and visiting industry members.
Dr. Erickson feels that Hocking College must serve two masters: the student population, as well as the industries that employ those students when they leave Hocking College.
Thanks again, Bill, for bringing us this excellent speaker!
