11/2 Rotary Newsletter

Sent: November 3, 2009

We had a great crowd for a "road trip", and a nice box lunch provided by Lee Howdyshell.  Guests for the day included Logan Library Director Andrew Herrold, Dutch Junge, Library Board member and spouse of Valery , Bill Boone, and potential new member Geoff Grimes.

Lottery

There was an abbreviated lottery today -- since we didn't bring the deck of cards to pull!  Winner of the small pot of $11 was Marion Riggs.  He will pull a card first next week to see if he wins.

Announcements

November Board meeting will be held on Wednesday, November 4th at 5:30 pm at the Home Tavern.  Board meetings are open to all members who have an interest in learning more about how Rotary works.

December 17th will the Rotary Night at the Bowen House.  We will have refreshments available.  Please invite your family and friends to join in a little holiday spirit with all of the lovely decorations during the Bowen House Festival of Trees exhibit.

Larry Willard gave a preliminary report on the Shrimp Dinner.  With attendance down due to the weather and many people being sick with the flu, it looks as though we will still have a profit of about $1100.  There are 11 members that still need to pay for their tickets -- please take care of this ASAP so we can close the books on this event.  There are a number of you who have not yet paid for their $5 pie contribution, as well.  Lets get this taken care of !

Sgt. at Arms

Just back from his fishing trip, Larry Willard stepped up to fine a few friends today.  Unfortunately, his first try netted nothing -- no one went to the wrong meeting site today -- at least no admitted it!

There were a number of latecomers today - Valery, Robin, Damon, Lucy, John, and Andy all ponied up.  Next on Larry's list was none other than Joe Murtha.  Joe was tapped for standing in the corner while the rest of us were pledging allegiance.  $2 came out of Marion's pocket for his lottery win.

Happy Bucks came next:  Doug Wells gave a buck for his son's win of a sidelines spot at an OSU game; Kathy K. gave a buck to recognize her husband Mike for finishing the restoration of a WWII Jeep that will be in the Veteran's Parade this Sunday; Ben donated a buck to let us all know that his brother-in-law got back from Iraq last Sunday ; Val donated a dollar to brag about her husband Dutch beign selected to referree a regional soccer play off in Canton this week; Andy McGhee announced the completion of the Rotary web site -- on which this newsletter is being composed!!!!! (Bear with me, people, because it will take some time get the hang of this new stuff!)

Program

Our program today consisted of a tour of the newly expanded Logan Library.  Andy Herrold began the program by telling us that the entire project will end up costing $2 million, all completely paid for with money that the Board had saved over a number of years for just such an expansion.  The expansion added over 9,000 sq. feet, doubling the size of the library.

In addition to remodeling and expanding the old library area for a larger children's section, they added a separate storytime room, a noise controlled teen room, 2 conference rooms and 32 public access computer terminals.  The project began in September of 2008, and is now 99% done, with final paving of additional parking underway at this time.

Andy also let us know that they were able to spend some of their funds locally, hiring Gabriel Logan for the millwork, Kilbarger for the parking lot paving and Fancy Plants for the landscaping.

While they have expanded significantly, diligent planning has made it possible for them to continue to efficiently run the library while only adding 1 1 and 1/2 employees to the payroll.  Despite having their funding cut by the State, the Logan Library will not have to cut employees or hours and they still have a budget of $150,000/year for purchases of new materials.

The subsequent tour was very enjoyable, with Board member Dutch Junge answering any and all questions from the group.
